"A culturally confident urban lighting project that transforms light into a curatorial medium, poetically reinterpreting historical space through restrained visual language, public accessibility, and sustainable design."
- World Front Design Award Review
2025 Lukang Dragon Boat Festival — Lukang Small Town Light Festival
This project demonstrates a highly accomplished example of large-scale urban lighting as cultural narration. Rather than treating light as decoration, the festival positions lighting design as a curatorial and spatial medium, capable of rewriting historical urban fabric into a contemporary public experience. Conceptually, the project is confident and culturally literate. The fusion of Mondrian’s geometry, Bauhaus rationality, and “New Ugly” visual tension is handled with surprising restraint, avoiding superficial stylistic collage. Instead, these references are absorbed into a coherent visual language that remains accessible to the general public—an important criterion for public-space awards. The river intervention stands out as a poetic highlight. The use of mist, light projection, and bridge structures creates an ethereal atmosphere that expands spatial perception without heavy physical intervention—an elegant balance between spectacle and sensitivity. Socially, the project succeeds in democratizing design. By relocating aesthetic experimentation from galleries to streets, it enables broad public participation while maintaining curatorial rigor. The emphasis on LED efficiency and controlled light pollution further strengthens its sustainability credentials.
